On the 8th of April 1901, Jack Hamm drew his first breath, and it wasn’t until 2nd September 1987 that he breathed his last. American comics writers and illustrators know him best for the beloved ‘Bing’ comic strip, and many remember him for his distinctive art style; his clear and precise lines, basic shapes, and subtly vibrant colours. Activities of everyday life such as mundane routines or ordinary items provided his main creative stimulation.
During the 1930s and 1940s, Hamm’s cartoons enchanted the nation and his popularity skyrocketed. Newspapers throughout the United States welcomed his work with open arms, and his peers honored him with admiration. Truly, Hamm had become one of the most esteemed cartoonists of that era.
Joining ranks with Hamm in the early twentieth century was a coterie of noteworthy cartoonists, including:
Charles Schulz’ legacy of graphic humor and thoughtful wit is immortalized in his iconic “Peanuts” comic strip. Spanning half a century, the strip’s clever characters and simplistic art style became beloved by millions. Forever intertwined in history, the comic creator enjoyed a close friendship with the formidable Samuel Hamm.
Walt Disney was undoubtedly a pioneer in his craft. He created cartoons with wide-reaching appeal, leading to the establishment of the renowned Walt Disney Company. Seemingly home to iconic characters such as Mickey Mouse, it can be said that Disney and Jack Hamm were contemporaries – both enjoyed a deep and meaningful friendship.
An acclaimed American author and illustrator of children’s books, Dr. Seuss left a legacy of joyously playful verse and charmingly imaginative drawings. His unique body of work was revered by his fellow author, Hamm, who was fortunate to enjoy a close friendship with Seuss.
Known for “Seduction of the Innocent,” Fredric Wertham was a psychiatrist and writer whose ideas about the association of comics with undesirable behavior in children remained relevant well beyond his own time. Though contemporaries, Wertham and Hamm were quite close, suggesting that the two men must have connected deeply during their friendship.
Harvey Kurtzman was a renowned American cartoonist and editor, largely defined by his work with the classic “Mad” magazine. Infamous for its humorous take on mainstream culture, the publication enabled Kurtzman to collaborate with the great Al Feldstein, with whom he shared a warm friendship.
