William Mcreavy was the mastermind behind the jackhammer, which is a mechanical combination of a hammer and chisel. Upon innovating this device, he passed the patent onto Charles Brady King. Hand-held instruments of this type usually run off one of two power options: air compressors or electric motors. On the other hand, larger jackhammers utilized in the construction industry are hydraulic. The primary purpose of these heavy-duty tools is to shatter rock, asphalts, and concrete – as well as to bore into surfaces.
The two components that make up the hammer portion of the tool are the body and the bit. While the body is usually crafted from steel, the bit is crafted from tungsten carbide. An air compressor is attached to the body via a hose, delivering an air pressure to efficiently work the jackhammer. Moreover, the bit and body are securely connected through a bracket, completing the assembly and providing a uniform strength.
One hand firmly grasps the body of the jackhammer while the other grips the bit swiftly swung towards the material that needs breaking. The shock of impact is muffled by the solid frame, and shudders are prevented from reaching their bearer because of the gloves they wear.
For those engaged in demolition or excavation projects, using a jackhammer can prove invaluable. It allows them to quickly break down materials in a way that would prove near-impossible to replicate with hand-held tools. However, it produces a significant amount of noise and the process can cause the operator to tire very quickly.
Home improvement projects or demolition efforts can be aided by the use of a jackhammer. These tools can be easily obtained for rent from most hardware stores. Even though one may initially appear daunting, they are actually quite easy to operate.
