Jack Hamm, a renowned American cartoonist and writer, left an indelible mark on the comic book scene through his acclaimed series, “The Ten Commandments”.
Ernest Hamm’s journey towards becoming a renowned cartoonist began in 1915, when he was born in the bustling city of St. Louis, Missouri. He honed his talents during the 1930s and polished his craftsmanship by working for various media outlets as a freelance cartoonist. By the 1940s, he had risen to prominence and was hired to take charge of the popular “The Ten Commandments” series that spanned six issues from 1949 to 1950 for the Catholic Comic book publisher, Our Sunday Visitor.
Hamm’s work was of particular interest to those of Catholic background, and other entities took notice of its success and reprinted it. In the ’60s, he created many comics with religious subjects that were published by varying publishers, and he additionally wrote multiple tomes about cartooning and comics altogether.
The passing of Hamm occurred in 1988, marking a sad day in the memories of those who loved him.
