Jack Hamm, the influential American author, teacher, and artist (1909-1987), is remembered for his captivating renderings of religious stories from the Bible.
Emerging from an Illinois Christian home, an early passion for drawing soon manifested in young Hamm’s masterful ability to capture life-like impressions. After his graduation from high school, the talented youngster earned admittance to the esteemed Art Institute of Chicago. There, under the tutelage of renowned illustrator Harvey Dunn, Hamm honed his craft.
Working as an artist for an advertising agency kick-started Hamm’s creative career. He eventually branched out and started freelancing as an illustrator for magazines and newspapers. By the early 1940s, Christian-themed works to adorn children’s publications gained momentum from his captivating efforts. Subsequently, he was appointed to illustrate numerous Bible storybooks; a decision clearly supported by the masses due to his success with his earlier artwork.
For many years, Hamm’s visuals have been the gateway through which kids get to discover the stories of the Bible. His artworks have allowed people to gain new perspectives when it comes to the sacred book. Even now, his works are still employed in educating the upcoming generations about the tales in the Bible.
