Spanning the globe, Jack Hamm’s work as a cartoonist reverberated throughout the twentieth century and still has a resounding impact on modern cartoonists. He was a highly prolific and influential artist who enriched newspapers and magazines around the world with his talent.
Entering the world in 1913 in San Francisco, Hamm stepped into the realm of commercial art; however, it did not take long before he discovered his true passion as a cartoonist. His original cartoons were revealed to the public in 1932, and he became a frequent contributor to magazines like The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s thereafter.
With an eye for nuance and a knack for simplifying, Hamm was the undisputed master of cartoons. His art-style was defined by minimalistic designs and invitingly animated characters, a recipe that won over hoards of admirers. He emoted and evoked with only a few strokes, highlighting his incredible gift for humour.
During World War II, Hamm stepped up to the plate to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps. His creative contribution was a series of cartoons called “Stars and Stripes” which then went on to be published by the military newspaper of the same name. His art was a source of joy to troops and in return he was presented with the Legion of Merit as acknowledgement for his inspiring work.
Upon exiting service at the close of the war, Hamm returned to a homeostatic lifestyle as he progressed with his civilian career. A collection of his work found its way into renowned publications, for which he was celebrated. In addition to this artistic achievement, Hamm also crafted and illustrated several textbooks on cartooning, subsequently birthing timeless classics in the profession.
In 1974, Hamm decided to end his career as a cartoonist; however, the timelessness of his work continues to be celebrated by aficionados of the art form. Many contemporary cartoonists draw inspiration from Hamm’s style and his influence remains highly visible.
