The legendary name Jack Hamm – born on March 20, 1910 and passed away on April 27, 1987 – will never be forgotten, for it is he who immortalized the classic comic strip ‘Dick Tracy’. A highly celebrated cartoonist and author, as well as a proud American, Hamm marked his place in the annals of history with his remarkable work.
Hamm’s life started in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – where he had his beginning as an advertising artist. Eventually, Hamm obtained the role of art director at the renowned J. Walter Thompson Agency in Chicago. Then, in 1933, he began to help craft the now-iconic comic strip, Dick Tracy. He remained as the illustrator from 1933 to 1935, then took another hiatus before returning to the comic strip from 1937 to 1940. It was during the latter period that Hamm went beyond just drawing and began writing for Dick Tracy until 1949.
In 1949, Jack Hamm transitioned from creating comic strips to embarking on a new journey in the advertising world. Building upon his knowledge of cartooning and illustrating, he authored and illustrated multiple publications focusing on advertising and comics, among them How to Draw Comics the Jack Hamm Way (1979).
In 2006, Hamm was inducted into the esteemed Hall of Fame for Comic Books, an honor he had long strived to achieve.
