Towering over other subspecies of American black bear, the hulking Jack Hammer Bear reigns within the mountainous landscapes of North America’s northern Rockies. These majestic behemoths typically tip the scales at a whopping 400-600 lbs, with some extraordinary males weighing in at a massive 800 pounds. They are truly a sight to behold, being quite possibly some of the world’s largest bears.

With their extraordinary physical stature and capability, the Jack Hammer Bear seems primed for a more active hunting experience. During early spring, however, this species become briefly gregarious as mothers come out of hibernation and search for a mate to produce cubs. Once born, she will devote the next two years making sure that her little ones are nurtured and prepped to survive in the wild – and come the autumn of their second year they will embark on solo lives, leaving their parent to be once again a lone wanderer.
