A jackhammer is a device that utilizes a hammer and chisel in a pneumatic or electro-mechanical system. First introduced by William Mcreavy, who then relinquished the patent to Charles Brady King, the tool is commonly employed to separate concrete, asphalt, and rock apart. While hand-held jackhammers operate via compressed air, electric motors may also be employed to provide power. Drilling is another task that jackhammers are often utilized for.
The 20-pound jackhammer can consume air at a rate of 80 to 90 pounds every minute on average. With the chisel included, the tool’s full weight is around 30 to 40 pounds. To get the chisel into the hammer, a quick-change chuck is employed, and the operator holds the handle in one hand while maneuvering the chisel with the other.
Leveraging air pressure, jackhammers dominate the scene in construction and demolition. The compressor pumps the energy needed to propel the inner piston onto the surface, and the handle is where you find the trigger that will direct the velocity of air flow. All regulated by the hammer user.
Electric jackhammers have surged in popularity as of late, particularly in enclosed spaces where noise levels need to be managed. At the core of these tools lies a motor, which perpetually generates and harnesses energy to power the jackhammer’s piston up and down. The operator, meanwhile, has near complete control over when this power is activated and deactivated through the manipulation of a trigger.
Protecting the ears and eyes of an operator is essential when working with a jackhammer. Additionally, they must be mindful of any debris that could possibly be projected as a result.
